ABOUT THIS PIECE:
Joseph, spouse of Mary and “foster father” of Jesus is worth honoring due to the significant role he played as a member in the Holy Family. The Bible coins him as a “just man” who took his role as father, husband, protector, and provider seriously. He was chosen to protect Our Lord at His weakest and most vulnerable state: that of a newborn babe. Though we never get to hear him speak in the Bible, we witness stories of him remaining calm under pressure and leading the Holy Family to safety.
Since Joseph was the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he is typically portrayed in Christian art with a sprig of lilies (another Marian flower associated with purity). Hosea 14:5, “the just man shall blossom like a lily” is often associated with Joseph.
